A 16-year-old teen who was shot in the leg along Rainier Avenue South Wednesday evening told police the shot was fired accidentally by an acquaintance showing off a handgun.

Seattle Police spokesman Mark Jamieson said the injured teen was treated at the scene by Seattle Fire Department medics and transported to Harborview Medical Center with a gunshot wound to his lower left leg.

The shooting occurred just before 6:30 p.m. near the corner of Rainier Avenue South and South Kenyon Street. Jamieson said the victim told detectives that a friend had been showing off the small-caliber pistol to a group of friends when it accidentally discharged.

Detectives are investigating, but have no initial indication that the shooting was anything other than an accident, Jamieson said.
